Michigan would require universal background checks to buy a firearm and punish those who don’t safely store their guns under new legislation filed today in the Michigan Senate.

The 11 bill package also works to prevent people deemed a danger to themselves or others from possessing a gun.

The legislation follows a string of emotional days after a mass shooting at Michigan State University.

Democratic Senator Sam Singh says lawmakers need to listen to students.

“Those students are grieving. They want you to know that they want to be seen. They want to be heard. They don’t want to be lectured, they don’t want to be told what can be done, what can’t be done.” said Singh.

The Michigan House has introduced its own school safety package dealing with mental health and other resources.

Democrats in that chamber are also pledging action on gun legislation.
