Colleges across Michigan are working to address the nursing shortage.

In a recent move, Alpena Community College will collaborate with Saginaw Valley State University to expand nursing education opportunities in Northern Michigan.

A $2 million state grant will allow students at Alpena Community College to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Saginaw Valley State University after completing their associates in nursing in Alpena.

Stacey Klump works with the SVSU nursing program. She said the partnership will allow nursing students in Alpena to conveniently access a BSN program.

“We're willing to go there with our faculty at their campus and teach our courses so that their students don't have to leave, but can have face to face instruction if needed,” she said.

Klump said SVSU currently partners with Delta College and Kirtland Community College to offer courses in-person, virtually and in the hybrid format.

“We basically will design a program with Alpena Community College that meets their students needs, along with input from their practicing partners, MyMichigan being one of them, and what they need,” she said.

Klump said university partnerships can expand educational opportunities for students in rural communities.
