Michigan Senate sets up pension tax bill for conference committee

Phillip Hofmeister

An income tax bill originally meant to cut taxes for retirees in Michigan could be headed for substantial changes.

That's because it's going to conference committee, where both chambers of the state Legislature can work out differences between their proposals.

Republicans worry the committee would use the bill to put money toward a fund aimed at attracting economic development projects.

Republican Representative Sarah Lightner says doing so would put a projected income tax cut at risk. Though the full text of the bill isn't out yet.

"At this point right now, it’s gutted, and they want to go to conference and put a bunch of secret stuff in it," Lightner said. "They want to put a bunch of secret stuff in it. We don’t exactly know all of it. They’ve developed some of it."

Democrats say any discussions about what the bill could end up doing beyond cutting taxes, would be speculative.
