Michigan Secretary of State outlines policy hopes for this session

Dwight Burdette

Michigan Democratic lawmakers say they want to keep petition signature gatherers from lying to voters.

Canvassers in Michigan currently don’t have to tell the truth to voters about what they’re signing.

Democratic Senator Jeremy Moss chairs the Senate Elections Committee. He says there are ways Michigan can limit misinformation without infringing on free speech rights.

“Practices like banning paid per signature, including holding the ballot committee accountable for their training practices and how they train the people who are going out and gathering petitions. So other states have tested this, implemented this and Michigan is behind.” said Moss.

Moss says Oregon provides an example Michigan can follow.
