Michigan Congressman Dan Kildee, D-Flint, and member of the House Ways and Means Committee, recently voted to release former President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

The summary of Trump's returns show the former President’s tax filings from 2015 to 2020 and that he paid no income tax during his final year in office.

Congressman Kildee voiced concerns over Trump’s taxes but said the other issue at play is understanding why the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) failed to conduct an audit.

"The only audit that was initiated, although it wasn’t completed, was initiated on the day that they received the letter from our committee asking for the documents themselves. One can sort of put to and to together. We don’t have a smoking gun," said Kildee in an interview with WCMU.

Kildee doesn’t suggest the former President has done anything illegal. But Kildee said the full report of Trump's tax returns will help people understand the specifics of how Trump paid no income tax or as little as $750.

"Nothing makes the case stronger than to look at these returns and ask yourself, my gosh, for any taxpayer, let alone the President of the United States, these returns should go under a real deep scrutiny," said Kildee.

On Thursday, Kildee voted yes for the Presidential Tax Filings and Audit Transparency Act, a bill that requires the IRS to conduct an annual, public audit of the President’s finances.

Michigan Congressmen Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, and John Moolenaar, R-Caledonia, voted against that bill.

It’s unclear when House Ways and Means committee will release its full report on Trump's tax returns.
