Incoming legislative leadership names appropriations chairs

Ryan Johnson for NPR

Incoming Michigan House leadership named the next Appropriations Committee chair today.

Democratic state Representative Angela Witwer will assume control of the powerful committee when her party takes over the House next session.

As chair, she’ll help negotiate the state’s next budget with the governor’s office and the Senate.

She’ll also be responsible for pushing spending priorities through to the House floor, a charge duty that led a former chair to resign this fall.

Entering her third term in the House, Witwer will be a newcomer to the Appropriations Committee.

She currently serves on the agriculture, regulatory reform, and health policy committees.

There she sponsored parole reform and opioid overdose treatment legislation.
