Michigan schools are celebrating their after-school programs

Tomorrow marks the 23rd anniversary of the “Lights on after-school" event which highlights the importance of out-of-school programs nationwide. Officials say rural districts often lack after-school programs because of a lack of funding.

Sonja Beasley-Hall is the network engagement manager with the Michigan after school partnership. She says giving students a place to go after school can keep them safe and help their families and the community.

“But that looks like 750,000 young people that are without an out of school time program to go to in the state of Michigan, and we need to provide them with these safe spaces where they can build positive relationships with adults.” Said Beasly-Hall.

In our listening area, officials say Harrison, Beaverton, and Farwell schools plan to participate in this week’s celebration.
