The head of a mid-Michigan software company has been arrested on suspicion of stealing personal information of hundreds of election workers in California.

Eugene Yu is the CEO of Konnech, based in Meridian Township. His company contracted with Los Angeles County to track poll worker data; things like training, work schedules and payroll.

The L.A. County district attorney’s office says Yu kept that information on servers in China, rather than the United States as required. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office assisted California authorities in Yu’s apprehension in Mason. Documents obtained from Ingham County’s 55th district court report Yu is a fugitive from justice, charged in Los Angeles County with embezzlement of public funds.

In a written statement, Konnech spokesman Jon Goldberg said Yu is being unlawfully detained, and that “any L.A. County poll worker data that Konnech may have possessed was provided to it by L.A. County, and therefore could not have been ‘stolen’ as suggested.”
