Woodward Dream Cruise taking place Saturday, August 20th, in Oakland County

Oakland County communities are preparing to host the Woodward Dream Cruise this Saturday. Organizers say the event draws more than a million people and is the largest one-day automotive celebration in the world.

Michael Lary is the president of the Woodward Dream Cruise. He says, as in years past, this year's route will run from Ferndale to Pontiac, but will not go through Detroit.

"If the city of Detroit wanted to be a part of this," Lary says, "we are more than welcome and open-minded to the conversation. It's really up to them."

An unaffiliated event known as Cruisin' the D will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 19th and 20th. It will feature classic cars and motorcycles and run along Woodward between Six and Seven Mile Roads in Detroit.

Laura Herberg is a reporter for 101.9 WDET, telling stories about people inhabiting the Detroit region and the issues that affect us here. She won a Regional Murrow Award for best Hard News story (Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio) in 2020 and she was named the Michigan Associated Press Best Reporter for radio broadcasting in 2020, 2018 and 2017. In 2012, she was awarded a SoundCloud Fellowship for her project, “Listen to Detroit.” She also is the creator of Complete Me, a podcast with only three episodes about how she has trouble completing tasks.
