Hospitalization due to COVID-19 is at its pandemic peak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says 43-hundred people currently need direct medical care.

Over the past five days, Michigan has averaged more than five thousand new coronavirus infections per day.

Speaking on Jackson TV last week, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey said there’s been an outbreak at his business.

“We had a pretty good outbreak at Orbitform and so we've had everybody off for about a week and a half now everybody working from home that can work from home.”

In the same interview, the Clark Lake Republican criticized Governor Gretchen Whitmer for implementing restrictions last year, but then adopting a lax approach for this latest wave. Whitmer and state health officials have said getting vaccinated against the disease eliminates the need for widespread lockdowns.

Shirkey has said he does not need to be vaccinated, because he already had the disease.

Doctors still recommend people get the shots and a booster even if they’ve recovered from COVID-19.
