Detroit city council approves offer to settle Detroit Will Breathe lawsuit

Detroit Free Press

Detroit's city council says the city can settle a lawsuit with Detroit Will Breathe.

Detroit Will Breathe is the group that led regular protests in Detroit against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s 20-20 police murder in Minneapolis.

Protesters clashed with police on a number of occasions. They filed a lawsuit saying they suffered police abuse when officers used chokeholds, tear gas, and other violent means to contain them.

A city counter-suit that claimed the protesters were part of a “criminal conspiracy” was dismissed.

Now, the Detroit City Council has approved an offer to settle the lawsuit for just over one-million dollars.

That doesn’t mean the case has been settled. The proposal is just an “offer of judgement,” and lawyers for the plaintiffs say they haven’t seen it yet.
