The January 6 attack on the Capitol raised alarm bells for a think tank studying democracy.

The U.S. House committee investigating the January 6th riot at the Capitol resumes hearings this week.

One Michigan U.S. representative says the testimony might be key to determining whether members of Congress helped facilitate the violence.

The committee scheduled two hearings this week, focused on how some extremist groups planned their march to the U.S. Capitol and what former President Trump did while protestors broke into the building.

Frequent Trump critic, Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, says the hearings provide transparency about the riot and those who helped it occur.

“To fully understand what was happening on the ground and how it led to that moment…realizing this is so much bigger than that day. There are so many things that happened before and after that day that I think many of my colleagues need to be held accountable to,” Tlaib says.

The hearings come as former Trump strategist Steve Bannon -- who faces a criminal trial this month for ignoring a subpoena from the committee -- says he now may be willing to testify.
