Michigan physicians with the Committee to Protect Health Care condemn the U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe V. Wade. The committee is supporting the Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative protecting legal abortion in Michigan.
The U.S. Supreme Court has sent the question of abortion to states and their representatives. A political question that the Committee to Protect Health Care says is a personal and private decision that should be left to a doctor and patient. While abortion is still legal in Michigan, an 1846 law updated in 1931 banning it could become law again.
“Thankfully we have an opportunity to pass a commonsense, middle ground law to protect current abortion access rather than to have the government decide for us.” Dr. Rob Davidson is Executive Director of the Committee to Protect Health Care and a west Michigan emergency physician.
“The Reproductive Freedom for All ballot proposal would establish that women in Michigan have the right to decide to have an abortion during the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. It would also protect the right to an abortion in cases of medical necessity and in cases of horrible crimes like rape.”
Passage of the proposal would protect the right to an abortion similar to Roe v. Wade.
