Stellantis says it will build two new development centers and re-tool two assembly plants in Ontario. It’s part of an investment worth more than two-and-a-half billion U.S. dollars by the automaker.

The money is intended to grow Stellantis’ electric vehicle capabilities, with new vehicle commitments to come for the automaker’s Windsor and Brampton plants.

The Canadian and Ontario governments are respectively committing almost 400-thousand dollars to the project. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau says the investment will help solidify Ontario’s automotive future.

“Investing in this multi-billion-dollar project is because it will deliver. It will deliver for works, it will deliver for communities, it will deliver for our economy.”

Stellantis had previously promised to grow its E.V. operations in Ontario during collective bargaining in 2020. Company officials say three work shifts will return to its Windsor and Brampton sites in the coming years.
