Senate disapproves of Governor Whitmer’s University Appointments

The Michigan Senate rejected the governor’s appointments to the Western Michigan and Ferris State University Boards of Trustees today.

Democrats are accusing Republicans of denying qualified candidates for weak reasons.

Democratic state Senator Jeremy Moss suggested one candidate former state Representative Jon Hoadley’s sexuality had to do with the decision.

"I’d be remiss if I didn’t bring up the fact that this is the second appointee of the governor to a university board of an openly gay person who is being rejected. Two now. Back-to-back." said Moss.

Republicans say they have concerns over Hoadley being a graduate student at W-M-U. They're also bringing up concerns about past financial positions supported by a Ferris State appointee.

A decision from the Attorney General’s office says students can serve on their university governing boards without a conflict of interest.
