Michigan School Safety Task Force unveils progress report

The bi-partisan School Safety Task Force within the Michigan House of Representatives recently unveiled a progress report after three months of meetings. The letter outlines several potential recommendations focused on health support and threat reduction, but none involve firearm safety.

Republican state Representative Luke Meerman says he hopes to see legislation on consensus recommendations move by this summer.

“It’s definitely something we, the taskforce have had conversations about," Meerman said. "And, long conversations. And sometimes hard conversations but, we’ll be recommending things all eight members can get behind. So we’ll see yet.”

Meerman says one of his top priorities is creating school safety coordinator positions at the intermediate school district level.

The group, evenly split between Republican and Democratic members, formed in January in the wake of November’s deadly shooting at Oxford High School.
