Lansing Mayor Andy Schor wants to create a crisis assessment team that will reduce the need for arrests.

Schor says the goal is to connect people with resources like mental health or housing services.

His budget proposal for the next fiscal year includes federal funding for the team.

“These are teams of EMS, police and social workers that will get together and respond based on which area of need.” said Schor.

City Council will vote in May on approval of the more than two hundred and forty million dollar budget.

Schor’s proposal represents a modest one point two percent increase over the current fiscal year.
