A bill to cut income taxes and let people over the age of 62 claim certain exemptions made it out of a state House committee today.
Some Democratic state lawmakers on the House Tax Policy Committee said the move could put the state’s coronavirus relief money at risk. Representative Julie Brixie said, “Federal relief dollars that we received actually made stipulations to protect states from taking financial measures that were not sustainable and put prohibitions on tax cutting.”
But Republican Representative Matt Hall says the state wouldn’t lose any federal money. “And the reason is because the additional income that’s come into the state through the sales and use tax and the fact that we’re using ongoing funding for this, not onetime funding," he said. He also said that may mean spending cuts.
