Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the blockade at the Ambassador Bridge shows the importance of a second Detroit-to-Canada crossing.
The governor spoke on Monday to an online meeting of the Detroit Regional Chamber.
The blockade by truckers opposed to vaccine mandates shut down the Ambassador Bridge for almost a week. A second span, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, is supposed to be finished and operating by the end of 2024.
And Whitmer also said she supports state and federal actions to ensure there’s no repeat of the blockade at North America’s busiest border crossing.
“If you’re going to unlawfully block international trade, it will not stand.”
Whitmer said the blockade complicated existing supply chain problem and dropped a 51 million cost on the state’s automotive sector.
