A new statewide organization is asking the legislature to hold hearings on gun control reforms. If not, it will put the issue of sensible gun control to voters.
End Gun Violence Michigan launched its efforts during a teleconference on Valentine’s Day, the four-year anniversary of the Parkland, Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 students were shot and killed in 2018.
“And what has changed since then?” Bishop Bonnie Perry of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan says “nothing.”
In the wake of school shootings across the country and recently at Oakland County’s Oxford High School where four students were shot and killed in November, she says it’s time for state lawmakers to act. End Gun Violence Michigan explaining bills for sensible gun legislation have been introduced.
“Senate Majority Leader Shirkey, Speaker of the House Wentworth, give these bills a hearing and then let our legislators vote their conscience.” said Perry.
The gun control reforms include universal background checks, safe storage measures, domestic violence “red flag” laws and prohibitions on guns at government buildings.
End Gun Violence Michigan says if the legislature fails to hold hearing and a vote, it plans a ballot initiative in 2024.
