Legislation in Lansing would increase security on Mackinac bridge and other spans to be deemed critical infrastructure.

A bill is moving ahead in Lansing that would increase security for the Mackinac bridge and dozens of other bridges in Michigan that are deemed critical.

“What it does is it affords these bridges the same protections that an electrical utility has, there's a number of different things identified as pieces of critical infrastructure, and this protects them, especially pertaining to trespassing and people illegally on those premises.” said Republican state representative John Damoose who created the bill after finding out the Mackinac bridge was left off the list of critical infrastructure in Michigan.

Damoose says just last year, the Mackinac Bridge was the target of two incidents that closed the bridge for a span of hours.

The security bill will now advance to the full house.
