Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Wednesday that the state will develop a network of electric vehicle charging stations along Lake Michigan. The governor made the announcement at the Detroit Regional Chamber Conference on Mackinac Island.
The governor said a network of high-speed chargers would make the shoreline more attractive to eco-travelers and would provide a boost to tourism destinations and small towns. She said the plan also includes creating training opportunities for jobs in the electric vehicle sector. She said that will help keep automotive jobs in Michigan as the industry transitions from fossil fuel-powered vehicles to electric.
“So together, we’re paying homage to our storied past and we’re charging up for an electrified future.”
There was no price tag or timeline revealed on the project.
