The Michigan State Medical Society says it’s time for people to return to masking up indoors. The reason is the rapid spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant.
The medical society’s recommendation comes amid fights over whether schools should be allowed to adopt COVID restrictions. Doctor Pino Colone is the president of the medical society. He says he’d like to see mask and vaccine mandates.
“A mandate from the state or national governments would take the decision out of the hands of individual school districts and certainly make it safer and easier for everybody.”
Doctor Colone says masks will also help protect younger children who cannot yet be vaccinated. Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state health department have endorsed local mask rules, but have held off on issuing any statewide orders.
