Shiawassee County residents vented their anger Sunday over the county board’s voting to give COVID-19 hazard pay bonuses to themselves.

Vice Chairman Brandon Marks started Sunday’s extraordinary meeting with an unexpected announcement.

“The first thing on the agenda is acceptance of the chairman’s resignation," he said at the start of the meeting.

Now former chairman Jeremy Root has been the focus of the firestorm of criticism over the Shiawassee County commissioners’ decision to give themselves bonuses from federal COVIDD-19 relief funds.

He did not attend Sunday’s packed meeting. Root will stay on the board, at least for now.

Many county residents say they want the governor to remove Root and others from office, rather than wait until the May election.

“This is truly an embarrassment. It’s an embarrassment to our community. And now it’s an embarrassment to the entire country," said Shiawassee County resident Eric Hazel.
