MI House will meet to approve veto-proof limits on emergency powers

The Michigan House will meet on Wednesday to adopt a petition initiative to rein in Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s use of emergency powers. The state Senate adopted the initiative last week.

The Unlock Michigan petition initiative cannot be vetoed.

Ron Armstrong is small business owner and a co-chair of the petition campaign. He says Whitmer overreached with her COVID-19 emergency orders.

“And that involves our own individual rights regardless of a pandemic. It does not go away during a pandemic.”

The initiative and a court decision will require the governor to get periodic authorization from the Legislature to continue to use emergency orders. The Unlock Michigan campaign is not through. The next target is the emergency powers of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
