Detroit Continues To Clean Up After Last Month's Flood

Russell McNamara

Detroit is still recovering from last month’s flooding.

Detroit Water and Sewerage Department deputy director Palencia Mobley says the city has received more than 23-thousand claims.

“Because of the large of the large volume of people, this will be an ongoing process that will take months.”

Officials say residents will need to duplicate those claims, if the federal government makes an emergency disaster declaration. Detroit City Councilmember Raquel Castaneda-Lopez says some residents are concerned about the process.

“There is a lot of frustration from folks who are filling out the claim who feel like, how do I prove this?”

City officials are cleaning the homes of some residents who fall under Detroit’s poverty tax exemption. But that only applies for individuals who are over 65-years old, have a disability, or who have young children.
