Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig makes his first political speech on Tuesday with many anticipating that he will soon announce a bid to un-seat Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Craig retired from policing last month, amid a wave of speculation that he was preparing a bid to campaign as a Republican candidate for Governor.

Craig has not publicly confirmed any bid for office but does acknowledge that he’s met with the Republican Governors Association and GOP officials in Michigan.

Now the former police chief will make his first purely political speech, addressing the Jackson County GOP at an event celebrating the birth of the Republican Party.

Craig has indicated that within a few weeks he will formally announce whether he’ll seek the governor’s office.
