The City of Lansing celebrated the career and service of its retiring police chief in a send-off downtown.
With tears in his eyes, retiring Lansing Police Chief Daryl Green addressed a small crowd of supporters at City Hall Thursday morning; he called it a bittersweet send-off.
“I feel blessed to have served the City of Lansing for 24.5 years, almost 25, and I am very encouraged that the city will continue to move forward and reimagine policing the way that our society is asking," Green said.
Green announced his retirement earlier this month. He said he’s most proud of the work he was able to accomplish this past year following the murder of George Floyd.
He next heads to the Michigan State University Police Department to serve as its chief of staff.
Lansing Police Captain Ellery Sosebee has been appointed as the interim Chief of Police. Sosebee said he's excited to continue the work Green started.
“Chief Green has been such a part of many things, but his relationships and building relationships with the community is a priority of mine. And, you know, obviously, curbing the violence in the city and then maintaining peace so people want to come here," he said.
Soseby has worked at the Lansing Police Department since 2002. His first day on the job will be Saturday.
