Police arrest Mount Pleasant murder suspect after asking for public's help finding him

Michigan State Police

Michigan State Police said Tuesday that they had arrested a man suspected of killing one person and sexually assaulting another in Mount Pleasant early Sunday morning.

State police had asked people in Mount Pleasant to lock their cars and homes as they searched for 40-year-old Isaiah Gary Gardenhire.

Police said initially the crime scene and any threat to the public seemed limited. But in an interview with WCMU News on Monday evening, state police spokesperson Michelle Robinson said their assessment had changed.

“As of last night, we didn’t believe that there would be a threat at that immediate time,” Robinson said. “As things are progressing, and we’re receiving more information from the public, then that’s kind of giving us cause for concern.”

“Anybody that might have an open building or a travel trailer, anything like that, we want to encourage them to keep their doors locked,” said Robinson. “We don’t know where he is. … He could be anywhere within the city of Mount Pleasant, and he could have went further. We just don’t know right now.”

Police later said Gardenhire was arrested "without incident"
