Detroit Police Chief James Craig is resigning. Craig has led the department since 2013, taking the position during the city’s time under emergency management.

He counts the establishment of the city’s real-time crime center and Green Light police surveillance program amid his main achievements as chief.

Throughout his tenure, Detroit had one of the highest rates of crime in the country.

Those levels have risen during the pandemic.

Craig laid some of the blame for the increase in shootings and murders on other public servants.

“When you talk about what and how crime can be abated, what we leave out of the discussion – there’s something called prosecutors, there’s something called the courts.”

Craig is a self-described Republican and says he has not ruled out running for public office after his June 1st resignation.

When asked about unfounded claims of election fraud, theories perpetuated by the state and national G.O.P., Craig would not comment.
