The Upper Peninsula Energy Task Force submitted its final report to Governor Gretchen Whitmer yesterday (Wed).

The governor created the group in 2019 to address some of the highest utility rates in the country.

Nick Assendelft is spokesman for the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

“The idea was to take a look at that issue in the UP and see if there were any kind of alternatives or changes or any recommendations that could be made to try to help keep those rates in check,” said Assendelft.

The 16 recommendations include the creation of a UP-wide electric plan, development of renewable energy and electric vehicle charging, and the promotion of energy waste reduction.

Part 1 of the task force’s report focused on propane availability in the U-P. It was submitted to the governor in April 2020.
