The ACLU of Michigan has released a report saying Border Patrol agents are engaging in racial profiling of residents of Latin American origin.

The report says more than 96 percent of those arrested by the U-S Border Patrol are recorded as non-white. And nearly 84 percent of all non-citizens detained are originally from Latin America.

Monica Andrade is with the ACLU.

“They're able to do this in part because local and state law enforcement are deeply entangled with Border Patrol,” said Andrade.

Andrade says nearly half of Border Patrol apprehensions start with a traffic stop by the police.

Andrade says the  Border Patrol operates far from the border and only 1-point-three percent of the agency's arrests in Michigan are for illegal crossings from Canada.

The Border Patrol says its agents can legally operate throughout the state and its policies prohibit racial and ethnic discrimination.
