It’s World Water Day and as activists in Detroit are taking the week to call attention to Michigan’s water access issues.
The People’s Water Board Coalition is calling on Michigan law makers to extend the state’s water shutoff moratorium. Sylvia Orduño is one of the group’s organizers. She says the wider availability of the coronavirus vaccine has not alleviated water affordability issues that pre-date the pandemic.
“We’re still very vulnerable economically and a lot of folks are trying to figure out how they’re going to manage paying for their household expenses as they re-engage.”
Nicole Hill is a Detroit resident. She says the state should establish rates based on income.
“We must demand a permanent moratorium to the shutoffs and a water affordability plan for all.”
Michigan’s water shutoff ban ends on March 31st.
