Despite a spike in new coronavirus infections, the state isn't planning to tighten restrictions.

When it comes to the more-contagious variants of COVID-19, Michigan has the 2nd highest number of cases in the country.

Speaking a news conference this morning (FRI), Governor Gretchen Whitmer said wearing a mask and getting vaccinated will help slow this latest surge in cases.

“If we all take our own personal responsibility here, we can keep these things re engaged, and do it safely and make progress toward the ultimate which would be spending Fourth of July together and enjoying it,” said Whitmer.

There have been hundreds of COVID-19 outbreaks attributed to high school sports. Starting next month, the state health department will require high school athletes to get tested weekly for the disease.
