Whitmer addresses new rise in COVID-19 cases

Michigan is now 9th in the nation in new COVID-19 infections.

Speaking today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she knew there were risks involved in allowing indoor dining at restaurants and high school athletics.

“We know that reengaging sports would create the possibility of additional spread," said Whitmer. "So each of these actions comes with a heightened likelihood that we could see spread and that's unfortunately what's happening.”

The decisions to reopen did receive some pushback within Whitmer’s own administration. In a letter to state lawmakers, the former Director of the Michigan health department, Robert Gordon, admitted there were policy disagreements with the governor ahead of his abrupt resignation.

Citing a rise in vaccinations, Whitmer says the state is in a better position to handle this latest spike in new infections.
