Beginning Monday, a memorial to the nation’s first all-African American fighter squadron spreads its wings in midtown Detroit.

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History holds a virtual grand opening today to celebrate the Tuskegee Airmen.

It’s the 80th anniversary of the famed squadron…which was home to the first Black U-S military aviators.

They fought both Nazi’s and racism during World War Two, earning more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses and paving the way for the integration of the U-S military.

The Tuskegee Airmen National Museum is set in the Wright Museum’s Coleman A. Young Gallery…named for Detroit’s first African American mayor who also served as a navigator and bombardier in the squadron known for the red tails of their aircraft.

The Tuskegee Airmen’s museum is moving from its former site at Historic Fort Wayne in southwest Detroit.
