Whitmer vetoes DUI expungement bill

A bill that would allow drivers with one drunk driving offense to have that conviction expunged was the victim of a pocket veto by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The legislation had broad bi-partisan support and the Governor is taking heat from both Republicans and Democrats over her decision.

Criminal justice reform advocate and Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit,  says people should have a chance to clear their record.

“Once people have done everything that we've asked them to do, once they've stayed out of trouble once they've gotten on the right path, it is generally the right thing to do to offer them that opportunity to expunge an old criminal record,” said Savit.

The bill was supported by top officials including Attorney General Dana Nessel and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack. Whitmer’s office gave no reason for the veto.
