The Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club has chosen its ‘Environmentalist of the Year,’ but it was not a typical choice.

The Sierra Club says for the first time in the history of the award, it recognizes the importance of elections and voting in protecting the state’s environment.

David Holtz is on the executive committee which chooses who to recognize. He says it chose Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

“Our way of recognizing not just the contributions of Secretary Benson, but the thousands of election officials all across the state who administered the election successfully under unimaginable conditions.”

Michigan election officials faced a pandemic, a record number of mail-in ballots, and a campaign of false allegations about fraudulent votes.
