A bill before Governor Gretchen Whitmer would allow college athletes to make money from endorsements.

The bill would prohibit schools from preventing a student from participating in athletics or receiving an athletic scholarship because they’re making money off of their likeness or name.

The bill would also stop athletic conferences from interfering. It would allow college athletes to make money from endorsements, which they’re currently not allowed to do, and lay out the terms for how they would sign contracts.

If Governor Whitmer signs the bill, college athletes in Michigan could begin making money from endorsements in 2023. Michigan would join California in allowing college athletes to make money using their image.
