A popular cross-country ski event in northern Michigan has been canceled. The North American Vasa Festival of Races normally draws hundreds to Traverse City.

The 45th annual Vasa was set for mid-February of next year. But this week, board members voted unanimously to call it off due to COVID-19.

Brian Beauchamp sits on the board.

“We looked at putting a cap on the number of participants, we looked at doing a virtual event, we looked at spreading it out through the course of even a week or two to lower the amount of people gathering at once. But ultimately it was just decided that we weren’t going to be able to pull that off.”

Beauchamp says the event was able to save some money by calling it off now rather than later.

The 2022 races are already set for February 12-13th.
