A five year investigation into corruption inside the United Auto Workers administration has concluded.
The union has signed a consent agreement that requires an independent monitor to oversee its operations.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider says in addition, workers will be allowed to vote if they want to elect their leaders directly.
Right now, rank and file members vote for delegates, and the delegates choose leaders.
“This will not be a system imposed upon the UAW by the United States government. Instead the members, the workers, will decide for themselves how to be governed.”
All told, two former union presidents, and 13 other former union and Fiat Chrysler officials pleaded guilty to various crimes, including stealing union funds.
