An F-16 jet assigned to the Wisconsin Air National Guard crashed in the Upper Peninsula Tuesday evening.
The Fighting Falcon from the 115th Fighter Wing in Madison was on a routine training mission when it went down on the Hiawatha National Forest around 8 p.m.
Emergency personnel searched overnight but didn’t find the pilot who was the only one on board. The crash site is in a rural, heavily-wooded area. Poor cell service is making communication between first responders difficult.
Local, military and U.S. Coast Guard personnel continue to search on the ground, by air and in the water. Additional crews are on their way to secure the crash site.
