Whitmer requests statewide mask mandate

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is asking the Republican-led legislature to pass a statewide mask mandate.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has already required mask wearing indoors and in crowded public spaces.

Whitmer says GOP support for a mandate will help with compliance.

"I think that the politics of masks has gotten in the way of us, really all stepping up to this challenge. And so I welcome bipartisan support on this front,” said Whitmer.

The number of infections, hospitalizations and deaths continues to rise in Michigan. Chief Medical Executive Doctor Joneigh Khaldun says health officials are responding to more than 500 outbreaks in the state. She says if the disease continues to spread unchecked, there could be over 100 deaths per day in Michigan by the end of December.
