Michigan Supreme Court ruling leaves uncertainty during pandemic

A Michigan Supreme Court ruling against the Governor’s ability to limit activities through executive orders is casting uncertainty over restrictions during the pandemic. Detroit is making its own city-specific rules for coronavirus.

City officials say Michigan’s Public Health Code allows for its public health director Denise Fair to make emergency orders. She says while rates in the city are low now it’s not an excuse to ease up on restrictions.

“We can’t move forward unless all of you as Detroiters continue to follow the safety precautions,” said Fair.

Toya Green owns and operates a restaurant in the city. She says while other Black-owned small businesses have closed during the crisis the order is still necessary.

“I stand with you guys in order to help us come over this virus,” says Green.

City health officials say the order will remain in place until the pandemic is “sufficiently abated.”
