Colleges and universities are a huge source of Covid-19-related outbreaks in the state.

Speaking at a news conference this afternoon (WED) Michigan’s Chief Medical Executive Doctor Joneigh Khaldun says that’s the reason the number of Coronavirus infections are going up in some regions.

“Grand Rapids, Lansing and Upper Peninsula areas have increased to more than 70 cases per million people," said Khaldun. "These increases are in large part because of outbreaks associated with universities and colleges.”

An outbreak at Grand Valley State University has been linked to over 600 infections.

The Big Ten Conference announced that football would be coming back next month – despite current outbreaks at the University of Michigan and Michigan State.

Khaldun says the number of Covid-19-related deaths in the state is staying below 10 per day.
