Recent polls show John James trailing Gary Peters

Republican John James is running for one of Michigan’s U.S. Senate seats for a second time. Now, he’s up against the state’s junior Senator Gary Peters. James has outraised him multiple times, but falls behind in polling.

John James is expected to sail through Tuesday’s August Republican primary. He’s already raised more money than incumbent Democrat Gary Peters four times in a row.

After losing to Senator Debbie Stabenow in 2018, this time the Farmington Hills Republican is pitching a change from the status quo.

“I'm Black, I'm a millennial. I'm a conservative. I'm politically exhausted. And I believe in getting things done in a state like Michigan a purple state, having a Stabenow, James, Democrat, Republican, female, male, boomer, millennial works for Michigan,” said James.

The Michigan Senate race is one in a couple where Senate Democrats could be vulnerable in their quest for control of the upper chamber. A recent poll changed the race from leans Democrat to “toss up.”
