An argument this [Tuesday] morning over wearing a face mask in a Mid-Michigan store landed one man in the hospital with stab wounds and another man dead.

Police say a man was denied service at a convenience store just south of Lansing.

Outside in the parking lot he argued with another man wearing a mask.  Police say the argument ended when the mask wearing man was stabbed.

A short time later an Eaton County Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot the suspect as he approached her with a knife and screwdriver.

Eaton County Sheriff Tom Reich was asked about the chain of events beginning with the refusal to wear a mask.

“Wear YOUR mask," said Reich. "I wear a mask.  My deputy(s) wears masks. We all have to be safe. We all have to do our part. So this doesn’t spread.”

Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order requiring people to wear masks took effect Monday.
