Be prepared to use plastic or a pass if you want to cross the Mighty Mac this weekend.

Starting Saturday the Mackinac Bridge Authority will not accept cash for tolls.

Kim Nowack  is with the MBA. She says the move is designed to protect toll booth workers and drivers from possible COVID-19 contamination.

Nowack adds the cash ban isn’t permanent.

“We can’t predict how long it will have to be this way, but it’s a temporary thing while we’re dealing with the coronavirus.”

Drivers will insert their cards into electronic readers themselves so toll workers won’t have to handle them.

Nowack says the MBA also offers a MacPass program which reads vehicle stickers and deducts the toll electronically.
