Restaurants across the state are closed to dine-in customers to limit the spread of Covid-19. Now a northern Michigan group is picking up the unused food and putting it towards a good cause.
The Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan is working in the Grand Traverse area to pick up food that could go bad during their hiatus. That food is delivered to pantries and meal sites throughout northwest Michigan communities.
Val Stone is with the rescue. She said since they’ve announced their offer, restaurants have been reaching out to put the food to good use.
“Currently we have 10 restaurants we are dealing with. But everytime the phone rings, it could be another restaurant who has decided that they want to share in what they are not able to use.”
Stone said the rescue serves around twenty thousand people each month. She expects to see more people reaching out for services as other resources across Michigan temporarily close.
