Former MSU Head Coach George Perles passes at age 85

Michigan State University

Former Michigan State football player, head coach, athletic director, and Board of Trustees member, George Perles, has died at the age of 85.

George Perles played football at Michigan State in the 1950s, before becoming a coach. After bouncing around with assistant coaching stints in Michigan and in the NFL, he later returned to take the head coaching job at Michigan State, where he would lead the Spartans to two Big Ten Championships.

Former Spartans fullback James Moore, who played under Perles in the 1980s, said Perles’ impact at MSU is monumental.

"He's impacted everyone's life that he has come in contact with. There will not be another George Perles."

Perles was also an athletic director at MSU and served on the school’s Board of Trustees.

During the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal Perles was accused of covering up a rape. He later resigned as a trustee citing health challenges.
